Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico, Caribbean heaven

Puerto Rico is a Caribbean island that is a self-governing commonwealth of the United States of America. Located in the Caribbean Sea to the east of the Dominican Republic and west of the US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico lies on a key shipping lane to the Panama Canal, the Mona Passage.

Little History

Christopher Columbus landed on the island of Puerto Rico in 1493 on his second voyage of discovery, and originally named it San Juan Bautista in honor of Saint John the Baptist. The name of the island's present day capital, San Juan, honors the name Columbus first gave the island. It was then settled by explorer Ponce de Leon, and the island was under Spanish possession for over four centuries.

Puerto Rico became United States territory under the Treaty of Paris, which also ended the Spanish–American War. The United States passed Law 5600 giving Puerto Rico authorization to create and approve its own constitution. The relationship between the United States and Puerto Rico is known in English as a commonwealth.

 Tropical Climate

Puerto Rico has a tropical marine climate, which is mild and has little seasonal temperature variation. Temperatures range from 21˚C to 32˚C (70˚F to 90˚F), and tend to be lower at night and up in the mountains. Year-round trade winds help ensure the sub tropical climate. The average annual temperature is 26°C (80°F). Rainfall is abundant along the north coast and in the highlands, but light along the south coast. Hurricane season spans between June and November, where rain showers occur once a day, almost every day. Periodic droughts sometimes affect the island

The illustration promotes tourism in this Caribbean island, and show the cannon from Morro castle. Castillo San Felipe del Morro, commonly known as El Morro, is a fortification built in San Juan, dating back to the 16th century, when Puerto Rico was under Spanish rule. Now a Word Heritage site it is one of Puerto Rico’s most iconic structures. Facing the Atlantic Ocean and situated in what is now known as Old San Juan, the capital city’s historic district, El Morro bridges the past with the present.

Waikiki

Waikiki, Honolulu

Waikiki is a district of the city of Honolulu, on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. Waikiki is the area of Honolulu bounded by the Ala Wai Canal to the north and west, Kapahulu Avenue to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the south.

A little history

We could say that Waikiki has a reputation as one of the best known beaches in the world. It was the favorite playground of Hawaiian royalty in the 19th century. At the time, Waikiki was an area of wetlands fed by streams from the valleys above Honolulu. That all changed in the 1920s when the government decided to build what would become the Ala Wai Canal, which would drain the wetlands and pave the way for later development.

These days, this 1.5 mile stretch of white sand beach is the nucleus of Hawaii's tourist industry, packed full of high-rise hotels that promise to treat you like a king, some of which may also require a king's ransom for admission. Although it is often criticized for its concrete-jungle appearance, large crowds, and touristy feel, there is a lot to enjoy here and you can still find a quiet spot if you know where to look!

Chicago

Chicago, urban city

Chicago is a huge city in the States, with several district articles containing sightseeing, restaurant, nightlife and accommodation you can stay and enjoy. Chicago is located in the Midwest along the Great Lakes shoreline. It is the third largest city and metropolitan area in the United States with a city population about 3 million and a metro population nearly10 million inhabitants. Chicago is well known for house music and electronic dance music, blues, jazz, comedy, shopping, dining, sports, architecture, highly-regarded colleges and universities, and premier cultural attractions.

With a wealth of iconic sights and neighborhoods to explore, there's enough to fill a visit of months without ever seeing the end.

Districts

The most visited part of Chicago is its large central area, which contains neighborhoods such as Downtown, River North, Streeterville, Old Town, the Gold Coast, Central Station, the South Loop, Printer's Row, Greek Town, and the Near West Side among others.

Collectively, these neighborhoods contain many skyscrapers, attractions, and highly ranked institutions. But there are also many attractions to be found in the city's other districts.

Chicago consists of Downtown, the North Side, the South Side, and the West Side - each Side named according to its direction from Downtown. The Loop is the financial, cultural, retail, and transportation area located within Downtown. Another region in the Central Area is North Michigan Avenue. This portion of Michigan Avenue, and its adjacent streets, is called the Magnificent Mile and contains high-end shops, retail, and restaurants.
The North, South, and West Sides of Chicago are not neighborhoods themselves, they are large Sides of the city that each contain numerous and varied neighborhoods. Residents tend to identify strongly with their neighborhood, reflecting a real place of home and culture.

North and South Lions statues

These pair of statues are unofficial mascots of Chicago city. They have been in the front of the Art Institute of Chicago for over 100 years. They were recast in bronze and installed in front of the Art Institute when it opened to the public back in 1893. Sculptor Edward Kemeys claimed that while the South Lion is ‘attracted by something in the distance,’ the North Lion is "ready for a roar and a spring".

Dover

Dover, England

Dover is a town in Kent, in the south east of England. It has been a permanent settlement since at least the time of the Romans, who were the first to record its presence, giving it the name Dubris. It also marked the start of Watling Street, a major Roman road. The Roman lighthouse built on the present-day site of Dover Castle is one of the oldest buildings in Britain.

Today Dover is a major port town facing into the English Channel and, at just 21 miles from the French port of Calais, it is the closest port to continental Europe on mainland Britain.

Sightseeing

One of the best way to get familiar with town is get around it on foot. The main shops are in King Street, Cannon Street and Biggin Street. There is a cliff-top 6km walk from near the Eastern Docks to St Margaret's Bay. You can also take a bus from Stagecoach East Kent.

What to see in Dover

 -   Dover Castle - known as the "Key to England", the castle has 2,000 years of history contained within its walls, including a Roman lighthouse, a Saxon church and a Norman keep. Below ground a series of casements and tunnels have been dug into the chalk. From these tunnels Operation Dynamo (the Dunkirk evacuation) was planned.

-    Battle of Britain Memorial - A very touching memorial dedicated to the men who fought and died in Britain's most desperate hour. Vintage airplanes are also on display.

 -   Roman Painted House well preserved ruins of a Roman townhouse that includes a hypocaust heating system and mosaic fragments.

-    Bronze Age Boat 3,500 year old wooden boat preserved in mud. After its chance discovery it was lifted and placed in a special gallery in Dover Museum.

  -  Grand Shaft Triple staircase constructed in Napoleonic times to enable quick troop movements between Town wall Street and the abandoned Western Heights fortifications.

Texas

Texas

... USA,  is the second largest and second most populous state in the States. Because of its size, specific culture, politics and distinctive history, Texans are recognizable for their independent attitude ans identity.

Little History

France, Spain and Mexico have all laid claim to Texas at one point or another. However, in 1836, Texas won its independence from Mexico and became the Republic of Texas. The most famous battle of the fight for independence was the stand at the Alamo. The Alamo was a stand against the invading Mexican Army. Although tragic, the sacrifice allowed the main army of Texas time enough to gather their strength and defeat the formidable Mexican army, led by General Santa Anna. Nine years later Texas agreed to be annexed by the United States and became the 28th state of the Union.

What to do in Texas

You can take a inner tube trip, floating down the Comal, Guadalupe, San Marcos, Brazos, or Frio rivers. Take a weekend on the Old West at a Dude Ranch. Or if you are in shape, hike and climb through the natural wonders of the Palo Duro Canyon near Amarillo. Pay a visit to a Western heritage at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, which are every spring at Houston's Reliant Park. Learn some Texas history in Alamo, San Antonio, or Visit Houston's Theater District - the largest performing arts district outside of New York City and Cleveland.
