Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico, Caribbean heaven

Puerto Rico is a Caribbean island that is a self-governing commonwealth of the United States of America. Located in the Caribbean Sea to the east of the Dominican Republic and west of the US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico lies on a key shipping lane to the Panama Canal, the Mona Passage.

Little History

Christopher Columbus landed on the island of Puerto Rico in 1493 on his second voyage of discovery, and originally named it San Juan Bautista in honor of Saint John the Baptist. The name of the island's present day capital, San Juan, honors the name Columbus first gave the island. It was then settled by explorer Ponce de Leon, and the island was under Spanish possession for over four centuries.

Puerto Rico became United States territory under the Treaty of Paris, which also ended the Spanish–American War. The United States passed Law 5600 giving Puerto Rico authorization to create and approve its own constitution. The relationship between the United States and Puerto Rico is known in English as a commonwealth.

 Tropical Climate

Puerto Rico has a tropical marine climate, which is mild and has little seasonal temperature variation. Temperatures range from 21˚C to 32˚C (70˚F to 90˚F), and tend to be lower at night and up in the mountains. Year-round trade winds help ensure the sub tropical climate. The average annual temperature is 26°C (80°F). Rainfall is abundant along the north coast and in the highlands, but light along the south coast. Hurricane season spans between June and November, where rain showers occur once a day, almost every day. Periodic droughts sometimes affect the island

The illustration promotes tourism in this Caribbean island, and show the cannon from Morro castle. Castillo San Felipe del Morro, commonly known as El Morro, is a fortification built in San Juan, dating back to the 16th century, when Puerto Rico was under Spanish rule. Facing the Atlantic Ocean and situated in what is now known as Old San Juan, the capital city’s historic district, El Morro bridges the past with the present.

Waikiki

Waikiki, Honolulu

Waikiki is a district of the city of Honolulu, on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. Waikiki is the area of Honolulu bounded by the Ala Wai Canal to the north and west, Kapahulu Avenue to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the south.

A little history

We could say that Waikiki has a reputation as one of the best known beaches in the world. It was the favorite playground of Hawaiian royalty in the 19th century. At the time, Waikiki was an area of wetlands fed by streams from the valleys above Honolulu. That all changed in the 1920s when the government decided to build what would become the Ala Wai Canal, which would drain the wetlands and pave the way for later development.

These days, this 1.5 mile stretch of white sand beach is the nucleus of Hawaii's tourist industry, packed full of high-rise hotels that promise to treat you like a king, some of which may also require a king's ransom for admission. Although it is often criticized for its concrete-jungle appearance, large crowds, and touristy feel, there is a lot to enjoy here and you can still find a quiet spot if you know where to look!

Chicago

Chicago, urban city

Chicago is a huge city in the States, with several district articles containing sightseeing, restaurant, nightlife and accommodation you can stay and enjoy. Chicago is located in the Midwest along the Great Lakes shoreline. It is the third largest city and metropolitan area in the United States with a city population about 3 million and a metro population nearly10 million inhabitants. Chicago is well known for house music and electronic dance music, blues, jazz, comedy, shopping, dining, sports, architecture, highly-regarded colleges and universities, and premier cultural attractions.

With a wealth of iconic sights and neighborhoods to explore, there's enough to fill a visit of months without ever seeing the end.

Districts

The most visited part of Chicago is its large central area, which contains neighborhoods such as Downtown, River North, Streeterville, Old Town, the Gold Coast, Central Station, the South Loop, Printer's Row, Greek Town, and the Near West Side among others.

Collectively, these neighborhoods contain many skyscrapers, attractions, and highly ranked institutions. But there are also many attractions to be found in the city's other districts.

Chicago consists of Downtown, the North Side, the South Side, and the West Side - each Side named according to its direction from Downtown. The Loop is the financial, cultural, retail, and transportation area located within Downtown. Another region in the Central Area is North Michigan Avenue. This portion of Michigan Avenue, and its adjacent streets, is called the Magnificent Mile and contains high-end shops, retail, and restaurants.
The North, South, and West Sides of Chicago are not neighborhoods themselves, they are large Sides of the city that each contain numerous and varied neighborhoods. Residents tend to identify strongly with their neighborhood, reflecting a real place of home and culture.

North and South Lions statues

These pair of statues are unofficial mascots of Chicago city. They have been in the front of the Art Institute of Chicago for over 100 years. They were recast in bronze and installed in front of the Art Institute when it opened to the public back in 1893. Sculptor Edward Kemeys claimed that while the South Lion is ‘attracted by something in the distance,’ the North Lion is "ready for a roar and a spring".

Dover

Dover, England

Dover is a town in Kent, in the south east of England. It has been a permanent settlement since at least the time of the Romans, who were the first to record its presence, giving it the name Dubris. It also marked the start of Watling Street, a major Roman road. The Roman lighthouse built on the present-day site of Dover Castle is one of the oldest buildings in Britain.

Today Dover is a major port town facing into the English Channel and, at just 21 miles from the French port of Calais, it is the closest port to continental Europe on mainland Britain.

Sightseeing

One of the best way to get familiar with town is get around it on foot. The main shops are in King Street, Cannon Street and Biggin Street. There is a cliff-top 6km walk from near the Eastern Docks to St Margaret's Bay. You can also take a bus from Stagecoach East Kent.

What to see in Dover

 -   Dover Castle - known as the "Key to England", the castle has 2,000 years of history contained within its walls, including a Roman lighthouse, a Saxon church and a Norman keep. Below ground a series of casements and tunnels have been dug into the chalk. From these tunnels Operation Dynamo (the Dunkirk evacuation) was planned.

-    Battle of Britain Memorial - A very touching memorial dedicated to the men who fought and died in Britain's most desperate hour. Vintage airplanes are also on display.

 -   Roman Painted House well preserved ruins of a Roman townhouse that includes a hypocaust heating system and mosaic fragments.

Texas

Texas

... USA,  is the second largest and second most populous state in the States. Because of its size, specific culture, politics and distinctive history, Texans are recognizable for their independent attitude ans identity.

Little History

France, Spain and Mexico have all laid claim to Texas at one point or another. However, in 1836, Texas won its independence from Mexico and became the Republic of Texas. The most famous battle of the fight for independence was the stand at the Alamo. The Alamo was a stand against the invading Mexican Army. Although tragic, the sacrifice allowed the main army of Texas time enough to gather their strength and defeat the formidable Mexican army, led by General Santa Anna. Nine years later Texas agreed to be annexed by the United States and became the 28th state of the Union.

What to do in Texas

You can take a inner tube trip, floating down the Comal, Guadalupe, San Marcos, Brazos, or Frio rivers. Take a weekend on the Old West at a Dude Ranch. Swiss mountains

Picnic in Swiss Alps

The image promotes tourism in Switzerland, particularly regions around Zurich and Lausanne cities. The Alpine region of Switzerland, conventionally referred to as the Swiss Alps represents a major natural feature of the country and is, along with the Swiss Plateau and the Swiss portion of the Jura Mountains, one of its three main physio-graphic regions.

It's easy to go up into the Swiss mountains. The mountains in Switzerland are easy to access. There are cable cars, funiculars and cogwheel trains throughout the country. That allows everyone to enjoy the high alpine scenery.

 Good to know

If you plan a trip or pay a visit, please keep in mind:

  • The weather in the mountains can change quickly. Check the forecast before going up;
  • Although it can be comfortable and sunny at the top, be prepared for low temperatures and strong wind;
  • Tickets are quite expensive. A rail pass will get you a discount.

Caribbean

Caribbean Islands

The islands of the Caribbean Sea or West Indies are an extensive archipelago in the far west of the Atlantic Ocean, mostly strung between North and South America. They've long been known as a resort vacation destination for honeymooners and retirees, but a small movement toward eco-tourism and backpacking has started to open up the Caribbean to more independent travel. With year-round good weather (with the occasional but sometimes serious exception of hurricane season in the late summer and early fall), promotional air fares from Europe and North America, and hundreds of islands to explore, the Caribbean offers something for almost everyone.

Little history

The Caribbean islands were first inhabited by the Arawak Indians, then were invaded by a more aggressive tribe, the Caribs. Unfortunately, neither could appreciate their victory forever, although the Arawaks may have had a quiet reign of nearly two millenia. Then the Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, French, Danish, and British arrived, after which the Carib population steeply declined due to various factors. The islands have known many historic battles and more than a few pirate stories.

Island on Java, Indonesia

Lies between Sumatra to the west and Bali to the east. Borneo lies to the north and Christmas Island is to the south. It is the world's 13th largest island. Java is surrounded by the Java Sea to the north, Sunda Strait to the west, the Indian Ocean to the south and Bali Strait and Madura Strait in the east.

Java is almost entirely of volcanic origin; it contains thirty-eight mountains forming an east–west spine that have at one time or another been active volcanoes. The highest volcano in Java is Mount Semeru (3,676 metres (12,060 ft)). The most active volcano in Java and also in Indonesia is Mount Merapi

Nature

The natural environment of Java is tropical rainforest, with ecosystems ranging from coastal mangrove forests on the north coast, rocky coastal cliffs on the southern coast, and low-lying tropical forests to high altitude rainforests on the slopes of mountainous volcanic regions in the interior. The Javan environment and climate gradually alters from west to east; from wet and humid dense rainforest in western parts, to a dry savanna environment in the east, corresponding to the climate and rainfall in these regions.

Culture

Java was the site of many influential kingdoms in the Southeast Asian region, so many books have been written by Javanese authors. These include Ken Arok and Ken Dedes, the story of the orphan who usurped his king, and married the queen of the ancient Javanese kingdom; and translations of Ramayana and Mahabharata. Pramoedya Ananta Toer is a famous contemporary Indonesian author, who has written many stories based on his own experiences of having grown up in Java, and takes many elements from Javanese folklore and historical legends.

Alaska

Alaska

...is the 49th and largest state in the United States of America. Separated from the rest of the country, (the "lower 48"), by Canada, Alaska lies on the Arctic Circle. It is still the least densely populated state in the union and for a long time was home to the lowest population. America's final frontier is the size of California, Texas and Montana combined, making it huge in comparison to the rest of the states! Alaska is also home to the highest point in North America and all of the top ten highest mountains in the USA. Across the Bering Strait lies the country of Russia and the continent of Asia.

Little History

In 1867, the territory of Alaska was purchased from the Russians for $7.2 million (or about 2 cents an acre). For many years people referred to the acquisition as "Seward's Folly", named for Secretary of State William H. Seward (1801-1872) who made the deal. They viewed Alaska as a frozen wasteland, not realizing it would turn out to be one of the United States' richest resources for gold and oil. It took until 1959 for the territory to become a State of the Union.

Travel

Alaska is huge. It actually spans what once were five time zones! So big in fact you probably won't scratch the surface of what it has to offer in terms of geography, wildlife, local flavor, or Alaska native culture. There are many things to do when traveling to Alaska. If you are the adventurous type then Alaska will be a great place to go. You can go hiking, biking, kayaking, fishing, and expeditions to see the wildlife of Alaska like wolves, whales, moose, and bears. There are also month-long expeditions to the top of Denali.

Lugano, Switzerland

Lugano, Switzerland. It is a lakeside city in Ticino (one of the Canton in Switzerland), and it's the only majority Italian-speaking Canton in that country. The lakeside is located at the extreme south of the country. This region, Lugano, is part of a temperate micro-climate, offering palm trees, picturesque boulevards, stunning views of the lake and the Alps, and plenty of opportunity for outdoor and indoor activities. Lugano also makes a good base for visiting other cities and sites in the area. The city is a pleasant place to relax in the summertime and is only half an hour away from the cities of Como and Vares in Italy.

Here you can find lugano art for sale.

Lugano, red cable car, vintage travel poster. This restored Poster and other related prints (coffee mugs, pillows, postcards, badges...)

 Sightseeing

Lugano is small enough to get around on foot, and many of the streets are pedestrian-only, but the hills above the lakefront are very steep so you can take a bus or funicular from the center of town. This is very convenient if you have a lot of bags and need to get from the station to your hotel in town.
Taxis can also be found on the main roads. They are metered and the fares (quite high compared to other cities) are set by the city. Ferries and Funiculars are great options for seeing the views.
